Dealing Out Hope

I was reading through some old journal entries the other day. I’m not a particularly prolific journaller so this particular journal goes all the way back to 2011!!

In it I came across this verse in my usual scrawled writing.

Psalm 71:14 As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more.

What a simple and yet profound statement from the Psalmist. As for me, in other words – whatever else is going on for other people – I will always have hope. What a bold declaration of intent and a challenge to our culture and society today.

Hope is a big word. A word that has grabbed my attention for a long time. I have become convinced that understanding and living in hope is at the heart of life, leadership and faith. In fact alongside it’s friends faith and love, we are told that hope is eternal. It will always exist even into eternity.

I thought it would be interesting to share a few of my favourite quotes on hope:

A leader is a dealer in hope. Napoleon Bonaparte

We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope. Martin Luther King Jr.

Any area of my life that is not filled with glistening hope is where I am believing a lie Francis Frangipane

My hopelessness about a problem is a bigger problem than the problem. Steve Backlund

The person with the most hope has the most influence. Unknown

One of my hopes is that I will be able to live a life that echoes the words of the Psalmist – “As for me, I will always have hope”. An easy sentiment but a challenge indeed!
